- Macushla Robinson

LINDY LEE
The Seamless Tomb
Sullivan+Strumpf Sydney
Opening Friday, 22 Sep | 6 - 8pm

Lindy Lee’s practice explores her Chinese ancestry through Taoism and Ch’an (Zen) Buddhism – philosophies that see humanity and nature as inextricably linked. She employs chance and spontaneity to produce a galaxy of images that embody the intimate connections between human existence and the cosmos. Her works are meditative, often revealing themselves through time.

"There is a Zen koan (paradox) that requires the student to imagine being trapped in a seamless tomb. The darkness is so absolute and profound that not a single chink of light can penetrate. Here you are - entombed for eternity. Understandably you might feel paralysed, panicked, overwhelmed - even annihilated. The Zen question is: how can one find liberation in this situation? Actually, we are always stuck in this tomb - it is the nature of existence." – Lindy Lee, 2017

ALEX SETON
I Was Here
Fremantle Arts Centre, WA
Until 16 September

In I WAS HERE seven artists turn conventional history on its head. The world is flipped upside down, long held beliefs are disproved and fact replaces fiction as the artists grapple with what’s real, imagined or forgotten over time. Comprising photographic and sculptural works I WAS HERE is a fascinating commentary on history itself and our relationship to the past.

Alex Seton continues his work with marble, creating sculptures which highlight our transient impact on the world around us. He also disproves the existence of an island which has been included on maps for many years.

Material Politics
6 - 15 July
Institute of Modern Art, Brisbane

The exhibition Material Politics takes its point of departure from Recession Art and Other Strategies (1986), curated by artist and then IMA Director Peter Cripps. Material Politics reflects on a longstanding tendency in Australian contemporary art to work with an economy of means. It focuses on artists who use readily-available materials for more than economical reasons, to embed political perspectives.

The Real Thing
Murray Art Museum, Albury
Opening 27 July

“Growing up every kitchen I knew was covered in Laminex. Its tactile quality can be seductive…” However “Laminex as a material is suggestive of artifice… It is applied to surfaces to suggest something it is not”.

The Real Thing consists of three groupings of work: A series of still lifes depicting arranged flowers in states of decay; A second group of works depicting bottles and packaging; and a third group with a single home interior, repeated in a variety of palettes.

The three groupings offer different interpretations of still life, creating a picture of everyday suburban life that while familiar, is reduced to artificiality.

eX de Medici
Spies Like Us
Sullivan+Strumpf Sydney
Opens 10 June | 3-5pm

'We want everything.

We watch listen to everyone. We want to be them and we can be with enough study and surgery we eat every thought of every fool in every place. We are unsatiated perpetual motion

The stazi's got nothing on us.' - eX de Medici, 2017

Although continually shifting in subject matter, eX de Medici's intricate watercolours form ongoing interrogations of the politics of power and the relationship between life and death. Beneath their beautiful ornamentations, themes of violence and destruction are orchestrated through the imagery of firearms, helmets and other military paraphernalia wreathed by organic detritus. This unique aesthetic draws from the artist's background as a tattooist and recalls the vanitas tradition. De Medici's miniaturist technique and technical virtuosity invites close examination through which the spectator becomes caught in a paradoxical vacillation between the beautiful and the repulsive.

SAM LEACH
Avian Interplanetary
Linden New Art, Melbourne
Until 6 August

Sam Leach's solo exhibition Avian Interplanetary is a proposal for a future habitat that takes into account the world view of non-humans as well as humans. The works explore possible connections between recent research about the evolved human preferences for certain landscape schemes and experiments into how creatures use visual signals and strategies to negotiate their environment.

The work consists of a large rendering of a cratered landscape taken from detailed images of asteroid surfaces, setting the basis for a future habitation. This environment will be combined with paintings of landscapes based on robotic visual systems, and sculptures referencing the visual and aesthetic approaches and preferences of birds, insects and rocks. This project draws out the links between landscape, animals and technology. Using paintings, sculpture and installation, the implications of the research on understanding how non-humans view the world yields both practical and aesthetic benefits.

TONY ALBERT
Defying Empire: 3rd National Indigenous
National Gallery of Australia, Canberra
Until 10 September

Defying Empire: 3rd National Indigenous Art Triennial brings the works of 30 contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists from across the country into the national spotlight.

The 3rd National Indigenous Art Triennial at the National Gallery of Australia commemorates the 50th anniversary of 1967 Referendum that recognised Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as Australians for the first time. It explores the ongoing resilience of Australia’s Indigenous people since first contact, through to the historical fight for recognition and ongoing activism in the present day.

Be moved by powerful art that touches on the issues of identity, racism, displacement, country, nuclear testing, sovereignty and the stolen generations through many media: painting on canvas and bark, weaving and sculpture, new media, prints, photography, metalwork and glasswork.

This groundbreaking show is the largest survey yet at the NGA and it highlights the continued excellence and diversity of Indigenous practice today.

VALE SYDNEY BALL

07/03/2017

SYDNEY BALL
1933-2017

It is with great sadness that we announce Sydney Ball passed away peacefully in the late hours of Sunday 5 March 2017. He was 83 years old.

We are very grieved to have lost our dear friend, our great mentor and this tremendous artist. But we are also so grateful for the many years that we had together, for his wonderful exhibitions, the many fun times at his house, for his passion, generosity, and for the colour that he brought to our lives.

Syd will be greatly missed by his family, loved ones and friends, and by his students and many admirers. He will be remembered for his enormous contribution to Australian Art.

"Well for me the holy trinity of colour painting is colour, space and light. Once you've got colour and space you are well on the road to getting magnificent light. You really are."  - Sydney Ball, 2012

We celebrate Sydney Ball.

ALEX SETON
Alex Seton: The Island
Newcastle Art Gallery
1 Laman Street, Newcastle
18 Feb - 7 May

Newcastle Art Gallery presents Alex Seton: The Island, a major exhibition of Seton's work from recent years. This compelling and salient exhibition contemplates and questions Australia's role in the asylum debate. 'The Island' as a concept can be a safe place of refuge, isolated geographically and ideologically from the humanitarian challenges the world is currently grappling with. Alternatively it can take on a more sinister tone as a place deserted for those who have survived a perilous sea journey only to be marooned, stateless, detained, looking to the horizon for help.

Within the exhibition: oars, life rafts and life vests are washed up on the shores of the 'The Island'. A key work on loan from The Art Gallery of South Australia, Someone died trying to have a life like mine (2013) was first shown in the exhibition Dark Heart at the 2014 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art. This major work of art is inspired by an actual event where 28 life jackets were found on a beach of the Cocos Islands within Australian territory, the owners still remain unidentified.

RAMESH MARIO NITHIYENDRAN
In the Beginning
Ian Potter Museum, Melbourne
Until 26 Feb 2017

In The Beginning by Ramesh Mario Nithiyendran pushes the symbolic and material qualities of clay to produce iconoclastic sculptures that break the rules of the medium. Combining Hindu and Christian symbolism with the subversive imagery of internet memes, his wildly misshapen characters act as avatars through which to explore gender and eroticism, religion and popular culture, exoticism and outsider aesthetics.

Meet the Artists
MCA, Sydney
Veolia Lecture Theatre
140 George Street
The Rocks
1 Feb | 630-8 pm

Moderated by Mark Hughes, hear from Sanné Mestrom and Sally Smart on how their work expands traditional notions of painting and sculpture by incorporating fabric and found objects. In different ways, their work begins with the body and its imaginary potential.

Sometimes subversive in their use of materials, the artists will discuss how they work with materials in different combinations, exploring the relationship between viewers and objects and the importance of different histories, including art and literature, to their art-making

SYDNEY BALL
Superposition of three types
Artspace
43-51 Cowper Wharf Road
Woolloomooloo NSW 2011
Sydney
10 Feb - 17 Apr
Opens 9 Feb | 6-8 pm

Featuring newly commissioned and recent works, Superposition of three types brings together 13 living Australian artists across generations and mediums dealing broadly within the vernacular of colourist abstraction, and also features durational works of sound, movement and word that will activate the gallery at different points throughout the exhibition.

Superposition of three types resists an often-oversimplified appreciation of abstraction as purely aesthetic and acknowledges its rich avant-garde origins. The exhibition aims to highlight the continuing efficacy of practices drawing on colour and form. Works in the exhibition will engage with space and architecture, bleeding and blurring across the Artspace galleries, creating connectivity between practices and a layered, immersive environment.
