Born in Auckland, 1981, Matthew Allen is an emerging Sydney based painter. He completed a Master of Visual Arts degree in 2006, after previously having graduated with a Bachelor of Visual Arts (Class 1 Honours) at Sydney College of the Arts in 2004.
Allen’s paintings are absent of any formal composition and physical elements of the artist’s hand to present an ongoing inquiry into the pure materiality of paint upon canvas and the fundamental structure of painting itself: colour, medium and process. The painting is delicately handled to produce soft gradients of tone that in turn creates an atmospheric, sensory and emotional experience for the viewer.
Allen was recently exhibited in Contemporary Visions, Beers Lambert Gallery, London, Beyond the Field, Bondi Pavilion Gallery, 2010 and included as a finalist in the Redlands Art Prize, Mosman Gallery, 2007. Solo exhibitions include Five Paintings, Factory 49 gallery, 2008 and Matthew Allen, Project Room, MOP, 2003.
