Kate Shaw, born in Melbourne 1969, completed a Bachelor of Arts, Fine Arts Honours (Painting) at RMIT University, Melbourne, in 1994.

Shaw’s paintings are an interpretation and meditation of the natural environment. The painting is constructed as an abstracted landscape from figurative fragments and irregular forms of marbled paint. The materiality of the painting mimics the physical forms and patterns that occur in the natural world. These incongruous shapes of flecks and drips of paint crowd the image, whilst it remains strangely empty.

Shaw has shown in numerous exhibitions nationally and internationally. Recent solo exhibitions include William Jolly Bridge Projection, Museum of Brisbane (2010) and Visitant, 24hrART Contemporary Art Space, Darwin (2008). Recent group shows include New Psychedelia, The University of Queensland Art Museum, Brisbane (2011) and Together in Harmony for 50 Years, Korea Foundation Culture Centre, Seoul Korea (2011). Shaw was awarded an Arts Victoria Grant 6 Month Residency at Flux Factort, New York and finalist for the Royal Bank of Scotland Emerging Artist Award, Sydney, in 2010. She was also a finalist for both the 2010 and 2011 Wynne Prize, Art Gallery of NSW.
